Gynecology

The specialty of gynecology is centered on the understanding of women’s bodies and the multiple functions of all the systems that are so beautifully interlaced. Many people only think of gynecological diseases and yet don’t realize the variety of normal functions that take place throughout the many years which are a revelation of God’s love in creation. When you look into the formation of a woman’s body while still in her mother’s womb and see the perfect alignment of organs that will transform an innocent child into a beautiful young woman capable of reproducing the human species, you have to pause and reflect on this issue carefully. From the moment of her first menstrual cycle and the development of her sexual organs, then move into a psychological development that leads her into a formal relationship with the opposite sex, to the process of fertilization and subsequent implantation in the uterus, to the glorious day of delivery of that child so much anticipated for nine months and now a special bonding only obtained through the gentle act of breastfeeding, to the raising of a complete family and yet culminating in a menopausal freedom of the cycles and the imparting of years of wisdom to the next generation. You can only see where every stage in a woman is not only marked with a purpose but the sum of it all is a life long journey full of joy and love.

In our practice we see women in a different light not as a diseased person but one destined to evolve from one stage to the next and we are going to help her realize this pathway. One important aspect is prevention of diseases and unnecessary exposure to potentially damaging situations. This can be accomplished with adequate education and motivation of the individual. It is our task to learn from the academia and from the experience built with time so a more profound office visit can be obtained.

The immense variety of situations we see on a daily basis can be summed up in the words of one of our students “I had no idea the specialty of Gynecology was so vast and interesting”. On a typical day we may have from a regular yearly examination in someone without any complaints and yet we discover situations where prevention measures are needed to an abnormal Pap smear and the presence of several other organisms that reflect on poor sexual behavior. They are all important, complex, delicate, sometimes painful and sometimes joyful situations that affect not only the woman but her family. A good evaluation in the area of abnormal uterine bleeding could lead to the discovery of Thyroid problems or even Diabetes in contrast to the average practice where the art of diagnosis has been replaced by the automatic prescription of oral contraceptives for nearly everything.

The careful study of Natural Family Planning lends a terrific hand in the field of Gynecology by granting the knowledge of the normal menstrual cycles and all its variants. This application of Reproductive Endocrinology done without ethical or moral compromises like IVF allows for the couple to succeed or accept their participation in the creation of Human beings.
